Join the Walt Whitman Initiative this Valentine’s Day for a special program celebrating love, poetry, and connection at the South Street Seaport Museum.

Queer History: Walt Whitman’s Secret Loves
Saturday, February 14 | 3:00 PM
South Street Seaport Museum, 213 Water Street
$10 admission (Free for Museum members)

Discover Walt Whitman’s secret loves as we explore 12 deeply personal poems from his handmade notebook Live Oak, with Moss. Co-authors of the acclaimed book—Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator Brian Selznick and Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener—will place these revolutionary poems in historical context.

Written with honesty and vulnerability decades before the term “homosexual” entered common usage, these poems remained hidden from the public for more than a century—a secret chapter of literary and queer history. Every guest receives a special Valentine keepsake from Bowne & Co.’s historic letterpress print shop, plus access to the Museum’s ships and galleries all day!

Whether you bring your special someone or come solo, we hope to see you there.
