Beautiful Dreamers” focuses on the friendship of Maurice Bucke, a Canadian doctor and superintendent of the asylum in London Ontario, and the great American poet Walt Whitman. Whitman, who had a mentally disabled brother, admired Bucke’s progressive ideas about care of the mentally ill. With Whitman’s help, Bucke replaced the asylum’s coercive methods of care with “Moral treatments” such as exercise, music, and talk.
