This exhibition covers Whitman’s entire career, from his beginnings in Brooklyn to his afterlife in contemporary art and literature. Drawing on the Morgan’s own holdings and loans from the Library of Congress, it includes more than ninety manuscripts, first editions, paintings, prints, and photographs. Among the highspots on display will be manuscript trial lines for Leaves of Grass, the famous Emerson letter commending that work, a presentation copy to Whitman’s portraitist, the poet’s manuscript accounts of his Civil War experiences, and the iconic photograph of him with his “rebel soldier friend” Peter Doyle.
