SUMMARY:Live Oak\, With Moss
DESCRIPTION:Live Oak\, With Moss (Abrams\, 2019) book launch celebration featuring New York Times best-selling and Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator\, Brian Selznick (The Invention of Hugo Cabret) in conversation with Whitman scholar\, Dr. Karen Karbiener (New York University)\, Tuesday\, October 15\, 4-6pm in the East Rotunda of UCLA’s Powell Library. This event is free and open to the public. Talk will be followed by Q&A and book signing; refreshments served. \nMore about Live Oak\, With Moss\nAs he was turning forty\, Walt Whitman wrote twelve poems in a small handmade book that were intensely private reflections on his attraction to and affection for other men. Titled “Live Oak\, With Moss\,” the poems were his most adventurous explorations of same-sex love\, composed decades before the word “homosexual” came into use. These revolutionary poems were never published by Whitman and have remained unknown to the general public—until now. \n\n\n\nNew York Times bestselling and Caldecott Award–winning illustrator Brian Selznick (The Invention of Hugo Cabret) offers a provocative visual narrative of “Live Oak\, With Moss” while Whitman scholar\, Dr. Karen Karbiener reconstructs the story of the poems’ creation and destruction. Whitman’s reassembled\, reinterpreted Live Oak\, With Moss (Abrams\, 2019) serves as a source of inspiration and a cause for celebration. \nThis event is co-sponsored by UCLA Writing Programs\, Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA\, UCLA Library\, Department of English\, and the LGBTQ Studies Program\, and is part of Whitmania\, the west coast’s largest celebration of Walt Whitman’s bicentennial in 2019\, made possible with support from UCLA Arts Initiative\, UCLA Humanities\, and the Office of Interdisciplinary & Cross Campus Affairs. \nEvent Flyer: (8.5″ x 11″) | (8.5″ x 5.5″)\nDigital Ad: (1920 x 1080 px)

SUMMARY:"Song of Myself" marathon reading at Bon Echo
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the “father of free verse” on Father’s Day!\n\n2019 marks the 200th anniversary of poet Walt Whitman’s birth and the Friends of Bon Echo will be celebrating with a weekend of Whitman-inspired activities\, culminating in our third annual marathon reading of Whitman’s epic poem Song of Myself.Thank you to our event sponsors\, Perfect Books Ottawa and Canadian Whitmanites! \nWant to be part of the reading? Contact Friends of Bon Echo Park at info@bonechofriends.ca. We’re aiming for the full complement of 52 readers this year so please pass the word to poetry lovers far and wide. \n** Please note that the location this year has changed to the amphitheatre to accommodate more audience members! ** \n“My foothold is tenon’d and mortis’d in granite\, I laugh at what you call dissolution\, And I know the amplitude of time.” \nThese words\, etched into Bon Echo’s majestic Mazinaw Rock nearly 100 years ago\, were penned by the American poet\, who has been hailed as the “bard of democracy” and the “father of free verse.” \nSong of Myself\, first published in the collection Leaves of Grass in 1855\, explores ideas of self\, comradeship and the communion between humanity and nature. Although the book met with controversy\, it has achieved a worldwide reputation for its literary significance. The Poetry Foundation calls Whitman “a latter-day successor to Homer\, Virgil\, Dante and Shakespeare.” \nThe Old Walt memorial is an inscription carved by stone masons into the face of Mazinaw Rock in 1919. It was commissioned by Flora MacDonald Denison\, then owner of the extensive property that is now Bon Echo Provincial Park. Denison was a businesswoman\, journalist\, suffragette and devotee of Whitman’s “democratic ideals.” \n\n\nFor more information please contact info@bonechofriends.ca or see https://www.facebook.com/events/380169099209253/.

SUMMARY:Live Oak\, with Moss: Walt Whitman's Secret Love Poems
DESCRIPTION:As he was turning forty\, Walt Whitman composed a sequence of twelve poems and compiled them in a small handmade book he entitled Live Oak\, With Moss—but never exactly published them. The verses describe an unhappy love affair with an unnamed man and are considered among the most adventurous and homoerotic work he ever wrote. Whitman pulled the twelve pieces apart in order to obliterate the narrative and rearranged them into other sections of “Calamus Lovers” section in Leaves of Grass. The original sequence was only restored by scholars in recent years\, and has now been published with an essay by Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener and illustrated by Caldecott Award–winner Brian Selznick. \nOn the occasion of Whitman’s bicentennial\, Karbiener and Selznick speak about the original collection and make the case for it as a source of inspiration and cause for celebration. They are joined in conversation by Queens-based poet\, Paolo Javier.
