SUMMARY:One: Xu Bing
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on a major new gift to our world-renowned collection of Chinese art\, One: Xu Bing highlights the painting Square Word Calligraphy: Crossing Brooklyn Ferry\, Walt Whitman (2018) by one of China’s most important living artists. Created specifically for the Brooklyn Museum in consultation with curator Susan L. Beningson\, the work celebrates Xu Bing’s close relationship with Brooklyn\, where he lived in the 1990s and maintains a studio today. Square Word Calligraphy: Crossing Brooklyn Ferry\, Walt Whitman pays homage to Walt Whitman and is on display in 2019 in honor of the poet’s 200th birthday. Whitman also served as an early librarian at the Brooklyn Apprentices’ Library Association (the Brooklyn Museum’s predecessor)\, and this exhibition includes material from the Museum Archives to celebrate his relationship to the Museum. Known as the American poet of democracy\, Whitman’s poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” celebrates our interconnectedness and asks an important question: “What is then between us?” \n\nXu Bing developed “square word calligraphy” as a system for writing English in the early 1990s after he came to New York. Although the rectangular units of writing resemble Chinese characters\, each one is actually a word in English. The overall work spells out the first section of “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry\,” reflecting Xu Bing’s experience living between two cultures while in New York. Xu Bing has said that “If I had continued living in China\, this work never would have arisen; it was a result of my living in New York. But I never would have known about Walt Whitman if I hadn’t lived in Brooklyn.” \nOne: Xu Bing is curated by Susan L. Beningson\, Assistant Curator\, Asian Art\, Brooklyn Museum. \n\nHeld on the Focus Gallery\, 3rd Floor\n

SUMMARY:Spencer Finch - Art Installation at RiverLink Ferry
DESCRIPTION:Spencer Finch\, a New York-based artist known for sculpture\, installations\, and drawings that capture fleeting natural phenomena and sensory experience\, will create an interactive work on the RiverLink ferry that operates between Philadelphia and Camden. In Whitman’s day\, a number of ferries connected the two cities\, but today only one ferry runs\, from May to September. Finch’s piece will directly link Whitman’s journey in the late 19th century to today’s visitors’ experience of the river. Ferry-goers will match the color of the sky and water by spinning two color wheels of Pantone swatches Finch selected after observing the ever-changing tones of the Delaware river and the sky above it. The ferry will fly two color flags each day\, one the color of the sky and one the color of the water. Finch has created a number of works inspired by writers including Emily Dickinson\, Henry David Thoreau\, and Whitman. He is the only artist to create a work for the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York. Finch also created an installation for the High Line in New York titled The River that Flows Both Ways\, inspired by the color and movement of the Hudson River. \n  \nThis installation is organized in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Libraries with major support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

SUMMARY:Poet of the Body: New York's Walt Whitman
DESCRIPTION:How did a carpenter’s son\, grammar school dropout and sometime hack writer become America’s greatest poet?\nTo commemorate Whitman’s 200th birthday on May 31\, 2019\, this landmark exhibition showcases New York’s role in the extraordinary transformation of Walter Whitman Jr. to “Walt Whitman\, a kosmos\, of Manhattan the son.” \nWhitman is now universally acclaimed as the “Good Gray Poet” and for his Civil War writings\, though less is known of his early years as a Long Islander\, Brooklynite and self-described “Manhattanese.” The exhibition presents the story of his coming of age as a poet through a unique assemblage of rare books\, manuscripts\, and artifacts\, many never before seen\, from the Whitman Collection of Susan Jaffe Tane\, archives such as the Feinberg Collection at the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library’s Berg Collection\, private family collections\, and forgotten treasures from Bryn Mawr College’s Special Collections and the Brooklyn College Library. Highlights include every American edition of Leaves of Grass published during Whitman’s life\, manuscripts and one-of-a-kind books that have remained in private hands from his time to our own\, his pen\, his cane\, and even locks of his hair encased in exquisite Victorian rings. \nA celebration of Whitman’s enduring relationship with the metropolis that sired and inspired him\, the exhibition is curated by collector Ms. Tane  and Dr. Karen Karbiener\, NYU Clinical Professor and Whitman scholar.

SUMMARY:Walt Whitman: America's Poet
DESCRIPTION:Two hundred years after his birth\, Walt Whitman remains one of America’s most influential writers\, arguably our national poet. His life’s work\, Leaves of Grass\, is a perennial best-seller\, and Whitman himself has attained the status of cultural icon\, his name nearly a byword for notions of inclusivity\, equality\, sensuality\, and the value of the individual. \nDrawing from collections across the Library\, Walt Whitman: America’s Poet examines many of the individuals\, beliefs\, and experiences that shaped Whitman’s work while also noting his literary legacy and continuing cultural impact. \nStephen A. SUMMARY:Whitman\, Alabama
DESCRIPTION:Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” is a joyful celebration of the diversity at the heart of this country—and our connectedness to one another. To commemorate the great American poet’s 200th birthday\, we’re taking part in citywide events with an installation of filmmaker Jennifer Crandall’s Whitman\, Alabama\, an ongoing project that brings the poem to life through the voices of Alabama residents. See the film with photographs from the collection that suggest the richness of American identity. \nThis exhibition is offered in conjunction with Whitman at 200: Art and Democracy\, a region-wide initiative organized by the University of Pennsylvania Libraries\, with major support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

SUMMARY:Writers Making Books
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is inspired by Walt Whitman’s instrumental role in the physical production of his many editions of Leaves of Grass\, which—as scholar Edward Folsom has stated—the poet not only wrote\, but made\, “over and over again\, each time producing a different material object that spoke to its readers in different ways” \nThe show combines a selection of examples from Philadelphia-based writers who print their own books with an eclectic\, international selection of contemporary titles shaped by their authors’ control of typesetting\, design\, print medium\, paper choice\, binding\, and distribution. Details about accompanying public programs to be announced.

SUMMARY:Walt Whitman's Prose and Poetry in Products and Advertisements
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special FREE Exhibition Preview and Reception! \nMember Preview 2:00 – 3:00 PM\nPublic Preview 3:00 – 5:00 PM\n\nAs part of our Bicentennial Celebration\, we are pairing with esteemed Walt Whitman collector\, Ed S. Centeno\, with an exhibition featuring various cultural artifacts\, commercial products\, fine arts\, and advertisements which depict segments of Walt Whitman’s prose and poetry. Mr. Centeno’s 33 years of collecting Walt Whitman related items has been “rewarding\, challenging\, and inspirational.” Centeno never intended to exhibit nor lecture about his collection; nevertheless\, he discovered that there is an audience interested in his passion. He says many people are curious to see what he collects\, and they are interested in understanding why. \n   The primary focus of Ed’s collection is the commercialization of Whitman’s name\, image\, and words in memorabilia\, commercial products\, advertisements\, fine arts\, and digital formats. His purpose in collecting is to enrich the knowledge of the past\, to preserve and perpetuate this aspect of collecting to future generations\, and to acquaint himself with the phenomenon of Whitman’s popularity. \n   Surprisingly\, this commercialization began as early as the 1880’s and Walt was not entirely opposed to having his image associated with products and services. Upon seeing the earliest advertisements\, Whitman laughed and said\, “that is fame\, giving the hat a little more height and it would not be such an offense…” Whitman received no monetary compensation for the usage of his name or image. Since the 1880s\, Walt Whitman’s image\, poetry and name have been used in advertising food products\, beverages\, music\, movies\, social media\, art\, books\, political and social awareness efforts\, theater productions\, and many more. \n   Up until the mid-1960s\, corporate America invoked Whitman with high reverence due to his iconic literary stature and fame through advertisements and commercial products that had no connection to his persona or body of works. From the 1970s and beyond\, Whitman’s persona took an entirely different perspective in mass media (TV\, radio\, internet\, movies). Today’s Whitman is more ambiguous\, daring\, complex\, and playful. \n   Ed Centeno’s fascination with the advertisements\, posters\, commercial products\, and private art commissions depicting fragments of Whitman’s prose and poetry humbly began while researching material for an article about American poets on stamps. To his astonishment\, Centeno learned that the Walt Whitman House in Camden\, New Jersey\, was only miles from where he lived as a teenager. While getting reacquainted with Whitman’s poetry and reading several biographies\, Ed discovered that Walt was depicted on cigar boxes\, wine\, beer\, gift cards\, insurance advertisements\, postcards\, postage stamps\, etc. There are also places and structures named after him—the Walt Whitman Bridge\, high schools\, shopping mall\, parks\, an apartment building\, housing projects\, bookstores\, and other commercial businesses. \n   Centeno’s collection clearly demonstrates the significance and resonance of Walt Whitman’s literary contribution in modern society\, the importance of his high stature in commercialization\, and the impact of his fame among collectors.
